Guernsey Challenges Guernsey Challenges Guernsey Challenges

The Team

The team for the London to Paris Row was virtually the same as for the Guernsey to Amsterdam Row but with the addition of Ian Atkinson, Matt Harradine and Joe Paul.  Colin's rower profiles are detailed below (and we have sneaked in our own profile of Colin as well!)

Ian Atkinson
"Adopted" by Credit Suisse

Age 40
Married: 15 years to Tracy
Children: Charlie (12) and Emily (10)

As a former tarzanogram Ian (sorry IanÂ… the things we do in our youth) is physically strong and fit.
He put himself up for the challenge many months ago when the challenge was still just a thought in my head. Knowing Ian I didn't have any hesitation in putting him on my top 16 list of rowers who I felt could make the challenge a success. His enthusiasm and strength will be a major asset in the London to Paris challenge. Ian has crossed the Channel in Guernsey's successful challenge on the Poole to Cherbourg race along with Matt Harridine, Geoff Gavey and Andy Chapple. The team won the 2003 race in a time of 11 hours 7 min.
Ian will row in the engine room most of the time.

Robbie Beck
Adopted by Aurigny

AGE 41
Builder
Partners name Sue, who is Robbie's rowing partner in club events

Robbie is an ex-Forces man. He has been involved with the rowing club for 10 years, but has always enjoyed and aspires to, any long, tough challenge. Robbie has aspirations to row the Atlantic and I see his physical capabilities and his attitude as being perfect for such an enormous challenge. It is Robbie's second challenge with the Fitness Factory, but has been a real supporter of all our previous events he has everything that is needed to fit in perfectly with what is becoming a very experienced challenge team. Robbie's ability in driving the rescue rib may also prove to be a real asset.
Robbie will spend most of his time in the bow or stroke position.

Andy Chapple
Adopted by KPMG

AGE 41
Builder
Married to Aileen
Children - Christie 10 and Meagan seven

Andy is a tough, resilient character with some 22 years' rowing experience with the Rowing Club. He has rowed the Atlantic - a massive achievement - setting a British record in the process. Andy's strong will and determination is always a real asset on our rowing challenges. He will also have valuable input when it comes to any practical problems we may encounter on the trip. Andy cites his biggest fear as his wife Aileen! As we are leaving the girls behind any problems at sea should not hold any fears for Andy.
His rowing position in the boat will either be in the middle of the boat (the engine room) or in the bow. The bow man also has the job of steering the boat. This may be one of Andy's last challenges locally as he and his family are considering emigrating to New Zealand.

Trevor Coulter
Age 34
Partner Julie
Children Gemma 19 Ben 14
Job: works at the Airport for Channel Express

"The Swede" as he known is a lean mean fitness machine. the Swede will act as cover for all the rowers he has a great attitude to  pain and working hard.... What a candidate for the row!
Trevor has only been rowing for 3 years but he loves it ! it must be the going backwards thing emerging again because his favourite sport is tug of war and he's the king of the Guernsey team.
The Swede has a super character and will fit in extremely well.. he does have one problem though!  he doesn't like the water and he can't swim! But nothing stops a Fitness Factory Challenge rower so we will fit him up with some water wings and he'll be fine!!
The Swede would definitely row in the engine room

Colin Fallaize
Adopted by MeesPierson Reeds

Age 49
Fitness Instructor and owner of "The Fitness Factory"
Married to: Karina
Children : Amy (6) Jacob (4)

A GENTLE giant is how some of his friends describe Colin Fallaize, the leader of the London to Paris rowing record attempt.
Others know him as 'Big Fal', big in stature and in heart.

Awarded the title 'Total Channel Islands' Sporting Hero' in 2003, his inspirational coaching took the Guernsey football team to win the Gold Medal at the Island Games that year. He now uses his talents honing the St Martin's Football Club.

Colin is the driving force behind the Fitness Factory Rowing Team and is chairman of the island's MS Society.

Hard on the outside but soft in the centre, he has, rather like a former English cricket captain 'A degree in people', and if anyone can bring the record back to Guernsey, 'Big Fal' is the man.

Geoff Gavey
Adopted by Ashburton

Age 40
Newly married

Geoff, or Gravy as I prefer to know him, is the much-travelled successful executive of the crew.
Working in finance, his job takes him across the world. Being a veteran Atlantic rower and sport diver makes him very comfortable on or in the sea - in fact he has a fair experience of over sea, under sea and on sea travels. Gravy will provide a huge contribution: he has participated in all the factory's major fund-raisers and has been a major contributor to the MS charity. Gravy had had a laid back, easy life approach to all the previous challenges. Even in the Atlantic row he and his rowing partner, John Van Katwyk, were the two most laid back Atlantic rowers possibly ever. But as laid back he may appear I know he has a 100% thoughtful approach to all things.
Geoff will be rowing in the bow.

Matt Harradine
Adopted by Total C.I.

Age: 27
Job: Fireman
Married one-and-a-half years to Gill

Matt has crossed the Channel before in Guernsey's successful challenge on the Poole to Cherbourg race along with Ian Atkinson, Geoff Gavey and Andy Chapple. He also competed in this year's indoor rowing champs and he also enjoys cycling and socialisingÂ….. something that is common amongst this extremely tough rowing squad!
Matt is a really strong and technically good rower and his choice was paramount for the challenge. It is Matt's first fitness factory challenge but if he can fight off the sea sickness he is occasionally prone to suffer, I think his inclusion will definitely give us a better chance, especially if the rowing boat catches fire as Matt is one of Guernsey's fine fire fighting crew!
Matt rows mainly in the engine room

Geoff van Katwyk
AGE 35
Self employed welder
Single, no children

Geoff is not part of the rowing team but is a major cog in the rowing event, as he is the chief RIB driver. Geoff was responsible for this job in the Millennium Dome challenge and the Amsterdam challenge, providing the rowers with what was a very professional fast response rescue and rowing boat to guard boat transfer service. He will also be a major asset to the skippers of the guard boats for any covering duties required whilst out at sea. His character is excellent and fits in perfectly with the whole team's requirements for the challenge.

Adriaan de Kooker
Adopted by Woodgate Ltd

AGE 51
Landscape gardener, brick-paver and builder
Married to Linda
Children - Sam 21(also in the challenge crew), Tom 18

Adek, as he is commonly known, has been in the rowing club for 17 years and has been part of the Fitness Factory rowing team since its formation some 13 years ago. He is a tough, competitive individual who likes the real things in life and the real qualities in people. He alone is instrumental in providing the rowing club with a youth policy, as both his sons are members of the Guernsey Rowing Club. Adek's strengths to the challenge will be his never-say-die attitude. His commitment to the cause will be 100% and it will take something serious to stop him from getting to Paris. He typifies the ideal mould for a challenge rower. He will normally row in the stroke position or engine room of the boat.

Sam de Kooker
Adopted by Specsavers

AGE 21
Fitness instructor personal trainer
Single, no children

This is Sam's fourth long distance challenge event, having already experienced the Home to Dome, the Island merry go round challenge and Guernsey to Amsterdam. He is proving to be one of the rowing club's outstanding young members and, potentially, can take the rowing club standard forward and upwards. Sam's fear will be the same as his fear for the Home to Dome and Amsterdam, as he suffers from seasickness and will have to overcome this unfortunate side effect once again. I very much doubt whether he will ever see the inside of his guard boat's galley. Let's hope Sam will be well enough to enjoy a cold beer when we eventually arrive in Paris
Sam enjoys various sports but represents the island at Tug of War for some reason he loves pain - and going backwards!

Lloyd LePage
Adopted by Guernsey Electricity

AGE 42
Mechanical engineer at Guernsey Electricity Ltd
Single, no children

Lloyd is a long standing member of the Guernsey rowing club and maintains a very active part in keeping the rowing club moving forward, both as a competitor, as a coach and as a good ambassador for Guernsey rowing. He is a perfectionist and a very tidy individual. Lloyd may not be the biggest member of our challenge crew but pound for pound is sure to be one of the strongest rowers. He will mainly row from the stroke position and will be a major influence in all stages of the challenge. He says his biggest fear is getting severe blisters early on in the challenge - something he suffered from at the Home to Dome row - but never complained. He looks forward to the interaction and the camaraderie of the challenge squad.

John Lewis
Adopted by Boatworks Plus

AGED 40
COOP Food Store Manager
Married to Janine
Children Joshua and Francesca

John is a naturally fit and competitive individual. He is a veteran of the past Fitness Factory fund raising challenges and one of the 'Around the Channel Islands' crew. When it comes to rowing, John is a very much the 'switch him on and switch him off" part of the crew. He will complain very little and just get on with the job. His position in the boat will more often be as stroke, setting the pace for the rest of the crew. John will most probably not say a great deal during the row but when he does, it will most probably be to tell the crew they are not rowing fast enough! I asked him what would make him row faster and he answered "My wife Janine in a chasing boat!"
He is a keen squash player and skier
John says that his reason for doing the row as simply to raise money for a good cause.

Joe Paul
Adopted by LR Trading

Age: 32
Job: Investment Manager
Married for five years to Andie
Children: Mollie (3) & Elizabeth (1)

This will be Joe's first Fitness Factory challenge
He is a charismatic character, quick and eloquent with his tongue and also quick in his singles rowing boat. Crowned club singles champion for 2003 season he re-wrote many records along the way. He also enjoys wind-surfing, skiing and beer!
Joe has been doing a great job as GRC captain, his enthusiasm and character rubbing off throughout the club.
He is a tough gutsy lad and this, along with the above qualities, made him a definite choice when I was selecting the Paris squad. I am absolutely positive that Joe will be a real asset to our world record attempt. If I'm correct in my thinking it will be Joe's maiden voyage across the Channel in a rowing boat, so some sort of initiation will be in order!

Karl Pederson
Adopted by Lloyds TSB

AGE 34
Married to Jo
No children

Karl has many years' experience within the rowing club. This is his second Fitness Factory rowing challenge and he is an outstanding candidate for the job in hand. He has a very likeable personality, a very strong physical capability and an attitude that meets all requirements for teamwork. He has rowed in every category within the rowing club - and in every category he has been a huge success. When picking this challenge team for Paris, Karl was one of the first names on my list.
His position in the rowing boat will be one of engine room or bow and his easy going attitude will make it very easy rowing with him and living with him on board his guard boat.

Stephen Pipe
Adopted by MS Society

AGE 43
welder/house husband
Married to Vanessa
Children - Joshua aged two

Steve also is a past veteran of Fitness Factory challenges and thrives on the pain they provide. He has 28 years' rowing experience within the rowing club and has held many records in the Island's rowing competitions. He has had an active interest in weight training/body building for many years and is a past 'Mr Guernsey' holder and 'Mr Channel Islands' runner-up. Steve loves to get his hands dirty and will not shirk his responsibilities at any stage. He has a hard exterior but a softer interior than most people would realise. His son, Joshua, is a major highlight in his life but he is soon to have another, as his wife is due to give birth to their second in July. He cites his reason for the challenge as to giving something back to others and his biggest fear is not finishing. 'Pipey', as he is fondly called, may find himself rowing in any part of the boat, stroke, engine room and bow.

Colin Robert
Adopted by NRG International

AGE 48
Civil Servant
Married to Jan
Children: Elliott, aged four

Colin, or Rube, as he's known to the crew, is an individual who likes to do things properly. He likes to know what's going on and will always have some constructive input to problems. The special services' (SAS) operations and challenges undertaken by others fascinate him. He has handled past challenges brilliantly and is raring to get going - he won't let anybody down. When you can get Rube to relax he has a very infectious laugh and sense of humour, which could be a real bonus for crew morale.
He is one of only two people to hold two Sark to Jersey records that still stand. He is also one of the crew of five - four rowers and a cox - to circumnavigate the Channel Islands in a fixed seat coxed rowing boat in 21 hours, a difficult challenge to beat.

Mark Sheppard
Adopted by Islands Sports Clinic

AGE 39
Fitness instructor, manager at the Fitness Factory
Partner's name: Sally
Children: Sebastian 22 months

Original member of the Fitness Factory rowing crew. Has been in the rowing club for 15 years. Mark's role within the challenge crew will be played mainly from the engine room of the rowing boat. He will provide his crew with the clock-work precision of maintaining mealtime procedures, as his eating habits will not be affected by this arduous challenge. His practical knowledge of navigation and seamanship may not be to the fore but his ability to provide his crew with trivia and memories of past events will be a source of entertainment, which will keep their spirits high. His reasons for the row are purely fund raising and his biggest fears are injury - or failure. He, too, is one of the rowers who will be turned on at the start and then have to be turned off when it is time to finish.
Mark has completed all the Fitness Factory Rowing Challenges including the Around the Channel Islands.
Mark regularly represents the Guernsey team at squash, is a keen skier and loves crosswords and his playstation

Mark Windsor
Adopted by Ashton & Allen

AGE 48
Advertising exec.
Single, no children

Mark is past captain of the Guernsey Rowing Club. He is not new to the Fitness Factory rowing challenges as he completed last year's Amsterdam challenge: he has a good personality and is keen to test himself as part of a team. His biggest fear is seasickness.
Mark is a thinker and is always likely to ask sensible questions. He has a great eye for photography and has been given the job of documenting the challenge with his photographic skills. Mark was invited into the challenge team because I feel that he has the ability to fit in and maintain the excellent team spirit that other team members possess. I think Mark will prove to be a real asset to the Paris challenge. He will do most of his rowing time rowing in the 'engine room' - the middle of the boat.
