Guernsey Challenges Guernsey Challenges Guernsey Challenges

Having met Colin Fallaize and some of the lads I have no doubt they have what it takes to complete this challenge - I wish them all the best with their quest for the new World record and in their support of the MS society  -  Pete Goss

The Challenge

The Guernsey rowing team's latest challenge was announced at the Total Channel Islands sports personality of the year awards.

In JUne 2004 year, Colin Fallaize led a team of 16 rowers to challenge the 480-mile London to Paris non-stop rowing World Record.  The team attempted the record in support of the Multiple Sclerosis Society and they hoped to raise enough money (£30,000) to introduce a dedicated MS nurse to the Bailiwick of Guernsey.  In fact, the team not only broke the World record by over eleven hours, they also raised three times the money they had first hoped for.

The first record for a row from London to Paris was set in 1991 by a team of rowers from the Metropolitan police. This record was then beaten by the Ditton Skiffers team before it was subsequently beaten by a team from Jersey who completed the row in Sept 2000 in 90 hours, 33 mins and 33 secs.

This challenge was the biggest the Guernsey rowers have ever attempted. They had to row further and faster and for longer than ever before. This race was more tactical than any previous challenge and timing was crucial. The rowing team of 16 was supported by 16 guard and RIB boat crew and by shore teams in England, France and Guernsey.  Also on board were a film crew who made a documentary about the challenge which we hope to see later in 2004.
